The team areas will be marked. We encourage teams to pick a theme, such as “gypsy spinners” to make this more fun. Kids teams are welcome!

The judging will be at 2 pm sharp. Medals will be awarded directly afterwards. We would like very much to have the shawls on display in the Fiber Arts Competition when they are completed. **

Rules

Process: Woven shawl.

Size: The shawl must be at least 72” long plus 5” fringe on each end. The width requirement is 15” or more. For Kids, the minimum width is 10” or more.

Warp

Each team will provide its own warped loom. The sett should be no less than 8 epi (1600 to 2000 yds/lb.). Natural colored or hand-dyed warp may be used, but no commercially dyed wool or synthetics will be allowed.

Weft

Hand carders and wool combs are allowed; drum carders are not. The weft yarn may be no thicker than 3 times the diameter of the warp end. The weft has to be at least 50% wool and the remaining can be other natural animal fibers (mohair/alpaca) and has to be natural colored, in keeping with the spirit of Kid ’n’ Ewe. Do not process your fiber to be spun at the event beyond washing it.

All yarn used is to be plied. This will aid with demonstrations and in the look and feel of a “fresh” shawl (one that has not been washed yet). The weft yarns are carded/combed and spun during the competition.

Team: Six members maximim/Minimum of five: one weaver, four to five fiber preppers/spinners. **

Equipment: Loom—warped and tied only. Use only 4-harnesses or less. Tie-up should be at the discretion of the weaver. Hand cards, wool combs, bobbin winder, and spinning wheels are allowed. Teams may bring a light as the only electrical equipment allowed.

Please supply Jennifer with samples of the fibers, a description of your process including weaving structure in advance. Each team will also need to have a display explaining their team theme and the process. A team captain needs to be chosen from the spinners who can multi-task (spin and answer questions), but the display boards will be there to help answer most questions.

** If there is a member handicap then it will be dealt with on a case by case basis with the event superintendent (Jenn Kulick).
